Currently, Senate leadership is looking for new ways to pay for a federal jobs and program extenders bill, which would help continue extended unemployment insure and enhanced Medicaid funding. Though passing this jobs bill is important, the Senate has suggested cutting billions of dollars from future SNAP (food stamp) benefits in order to help finance the package. If the Senate does opt for these cuts, the cut in benefits is estimated to total $9.56 billion!
These SNAP benefits are desperately needed by families who are struggling to put food on the table. During these difficult economic times, individuals need as many resources as possible in order to help make ends meet. Therefore, cutting SNAP benefits should not be used as an offset to help finance the new extender bill.
Call now and let our senators from Washington, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, know that you oppose any cuts to SNAP Benefits as a way to finance the new extender package! Just a simple call will help preserve funding for this vital program.
Sample Message: “My name is _________. As the Senate works to craft another extender bill, please oppose cuts to SNAP benefits as an offset and work on finding alternatives to finance this bill. People should not go hungry in order to pay for other benefits.”
